Gwalior – the Scindia City

The name Gwalior is associated with Suraj Sen, an eighth century prince of the Kachhwaha Rajput clan. On losing his way in the jungle, he met sage Gwalipa, who gave him drinking water from a pond. The water cured the prince's leprosy. The prince built a wall on the hill to protect the sages from wild animals. Later, he built a fort and palace and named the place Gwalior after the sage's name.

The Scindias of Gwalior were a major power from the second half of the 18th century. They had a big role in the 1857 War of Independence. They were defeated, but the Scindia family continued to rule Gwalior until 1947.

Gwalior has always been a centre of music. The Gwalior Gharana is an old Khayal gharana. Tansen's ashes were buried in Gwalior. Tansen Samaroh is held here every year. Baijnath Prasad or Baiju Bawra, the classical Dhrupad singer, lived in Gwalior all his life. Born in Chanderi, he was trained in music by Swami Haridas. Baiju was the court musician of Gwalior. Most classical musicians owe a lot to the Gwalior style of singing.

Dhrupad singing, a major vocal genre in Hindustani classical music, was patronised by Raja Man Singh Tomar, the king of Gwalior, from 1486 to 1516 AD, Gwalior used to have huge manufacturing industries, such as J.C. MILLS of Birlanagar and Gwalior Grasim. Now, it is left only with J.B.Mangharam. It has developed dairy, chemical, manufacturing, textiles, and other industries. Pottery too is a thriving sector. Gwalior attracts a lot of tourists.
