The city is the fifth most populous place in Tamil Nadu.

A major textile center, Salem has many spinning mills and weaving and garment units. After 1960, private handloom weaving thrived in the region. The 1980s saw a massive growth in handloom industry. Salem also has a large sago industry; Tapioca is cultivated in 34,000 hectares here. Salem has 650 units processing tapioca, almost 80 percent of the national demand for sago and starch is met by Salem. The Salem Steel Plant produces cold as well as hot rolled stainless steel.
