Bilaspur - A developing city

Bilaspur is the second biggest city in Chhattisgarh after Raipur and is also the headquarters of the district. The Chhattisgarh High Court is located here. It is famous across the country for the quality rice doobraj and the saris made from Kosa silk.

Ratanpur's Kalchuri dynasty ruled Bilaspur for a long period of time. In 1741, a representative of the Maratha Empire arrived here to rule and later the British replaced the Marathas in 1818. Bilaspur district was formed in 1861 and became a municipality in 1867. It faced famines frequently in the 19th century and during a severe famine in 1899-1900, the rains failed almost totally, and, as a result, untold sufferings forced large-scale migration.

Guru Ghasidas launched the Satnami movement in 1820. He was active in the Sonakhan forest region where he preached that the god is not found in idols but said the god was truth. His farmer-followers were mostly from the Schedule castes. The Bilaspur University has been named after Guru Ghasidas.

Bilaspur was put on the railway map in 1888 when the Bengal Nagpur Railway laid the tracks from Rajnandgaon to Bilaspur. The Bilaspur-Jharsuguda rail line was built around the same time.

Bilaspur and its surrounding region produce 10,000 MW of power. There are plans to generate 50,000 MW of more power from here in the near future. Bilaspur has many industrial areas, including Silpahri and Tifra, Sirgitti. Bhilai Engineering Corporation's BEC Fertilizers unit is operating from the Sirgitii Industrial area. Bilaspur has a 2980 MW NTPC power plant at Sipat. The city is witnessing the launch of malls and multiplexes in quick succession. Major Banks have branches and ATMs in Bilaspur.
