In order to locate your seat you need to know how the Indian Railway team functions. All of you are well aware of the fact that the trains are divided into 3 broad categories of coaches

  • A/C sleeper Car
  • Sleeper Car (Reserved IInd Class or Sleeper Class)
  • Unreserved Coaches

The basis on which you can find seat availability Indian railways also depends on a couple of other factors which will be looked into in detail:

PNR status

  • You can easily locate whether the seats booked under your name is confirmed or not by entering your PNR number. PNR stands for Passenger’s Name Record.
  • You get to know whether your seat stands against RAC. RAC stands for Reservation against Cancellation.
  • When you are able to check for PNR status online and the result against your name is RAC 150. It means 150 people are waiting in the queue before you for the berth seats to be confirmed under their name.
  • And then you stand a feeble chance to get the berth under your name.
  • But, is it possible for all 150 people to cancel their tickets at the same time?
  • The answer is no. In this case you need to opt for a different train plying on the start and end point of journey.
  • For example, a train which goes from Bangalore to Chennai at 07:15 am is not available, you look for a train plying to the same destination may be via a different route or timing.
  • Else you need to opt for a different mode of transport.

Seat numbers

  • The seats are numbered between 1 and 73. This is for one compartment.
  • The berths are divided into
  1. Lower Berth
  2. Middle Berth
  3. Upper Berth
  4. Side lower Berth
  5. Side Upper Berth

Upper berth can be a two tier or a three tier. Three tier is three steps on the ladder to reach the top-most berth while two tier is two steps on the ladder.

  • The similar arrangement is for A/C two tier or three tier.
  • On an average 72*13 sleeper cars plus 72*4 A/C car coaches plus 72*4 Un-Reserved coaches equals 1512.
  • More than 1500 passengers commute by Indian Railways on a day to day basis.
  • On top of this there are standing commuters especially when the trains are jam packed on festival days or on week-ends.
  • More than 150-200 trains ply through Indian Railways every

day.

The railways are the biggest turn over and labor intensive industries in the whole of India.
