Krishnarajapuram Junction Railway Station (station code KJM) serves the international tech park along and the nearby region where many of its staffers live. So, many trains halt at Krishnarajapuram station. Krishnarajapuram Junction is on the Bangalore-Chennai main line of the South Western Railway in the Bangalore division.  There is also a line to Guntakal and this track is used mostly by goods trains and oil tankers. A few Tamil Nadu and Kerala express trains heading towards the north use this line to bypass Bangalore. All trains going from Yeshvantapur Railway Station towards Bangarpet stop at Krishnarajapuram Junction.

Krishnarajapuram has four platforms and has two tracks for non-stop trains. Long-distance trains stop on platform No. 4 and incoming trains at platform No. 3. The short platform No. 1 receives goods and mail trains.  It is a busy station with as many as 89 trains stopping at the station every day. The station is connected by the railway network with cities such as Chennai, Arakkonam, Bhubaneswar, Howrah, Brindavan, Nagercoil, Mumbai, Tirupati, Thiruananthpuram, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore and Rajkot.

Facilities at Krishnarajapuram Station-

Krishnarajapuram Junction Railway Station has a computerized ticket booking and reservation counters, a food court, waiting room for upper classes, pre-paid auto-rickshaws, tea stalls and drinking water facilities. A general waiting room too is at the planning stage. The old station was upgraded about a year back. Its short platforms have been extended to accommodate trains with more coaches. And they have been covered too. But the station still faces water shortage and its security needs to be strengthened, say regular commuters.

Carmelaram Railway Station

Carmelaram or Carmelaram is a small village that is located on the south-eastern corner of the Bangalore city. In the past, it was merely a village inhabited by backward people, but now it is a well-developed suburban area and is a part of Municipal Corporation of Bangalore, which is Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palika. Unlike other suburbs and parts of Bangalore city, Carmelaram is a very calm and quiet place.

For transportation, people from southern and eastern part of the city use Carmelaram or Carmelaram railway station. All the trains that pass through Hosur have a stoppage here. This saves you much time of journey.

Overview of Carmelaram Railway Station:

Carmelaram station is situated in the east corner of Bangalore city between vacant Grasslands and many marble shops. The station is not a very developed station, and when you walk into the station, you get a look of a typical small town, quaint railway station. The steps at the entrance are chipped.

The station has two tracks and two platforms. These platforms are not very high enough to facilitate passenger to board the trains. The length of the platforms is not long enough to accommodate all the coaches of the train, hence people find it very difficult to board trains at this station as most of the coaches stop beyond the platform.

There is no canopied waiting area and there is a lack of proper lighting too. The size of the station is not more than a normal bus shelter in India. When it comes to the number of trains stopping here, there are more than a dozen of trains bound to cities like Salem, Dharampuri, Kannur and Ernakulum have a stoppage here. Most of the passengers from the nearby area like Bellandur, Marathahalli, and Madiwala use this station. Carmelaram station has reduced the journey time for passengers who had to travel to the city station which wasted a lot of time.

There are plans of Indian Railways to make some improvements in the station such as raising the level and increasing the length of the platform along with parking for private vehicles and proper lighting facilities.

Railway Stations in Siliguri

Indian Railways is one of the most important assets of the nation as it plays a vital role in transportation of millions of people and freight to remote destinations all across the country. The origin of railways in India dates back in 1853 when first railway line was established between Bombay and Thane. Since then, Indian Railways has seen rapid and continuous developments which have resulted in such a vast network of railway lines that it is ranked among the largest rail networks of the world.

Siliguri is a small town in the district of Darjeeling in the state of Assam of North East India. Located between the foothills of Himalayas and the Mahananda River Banks, it is a premier tourist spot, commercial and education centre of North Bengal. The city of Siliguri has seen a significant economic boom in the past few years in various sectors like retail, real estate and hospitality sector. Due to its rapid development, railways have become a very important aspect for the city.

The city of Siliguri has five major railway stations named Siliguri Town Railway Station, Siliguri Junction, New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, Bagdora Railway Station and Naxalbari Railway station.

  • Siliguri Town Railway Station:

Siliguri Town Railway Station or SGUT is the oldest railway station of the city and was built and opened in the year 1880. At first, the Siliguri town station was connected to Calcutta through a narrow gauge line, but in 1926, it was converted into broad gauge line. This station served the most part of eastern Bengal (Now Bangladesh) before 1947.

  • Siliguri Junction Railway Station:

After partition in 1947, the Railways in Bengal were greatly disturbed due to loss of East Bengal to Pakistan. Due to this, the Siliguri Town Railway Station lost its significance, and there was a need for a new railway station with a newly developed railway route for this area. The Siliguri Junction Railway Station became the main station of this area with all three gauge used in railways. Siliguri junction is special because it is only station of Indian Railways, which has all three gauges of railway used in India.

The narrow gauge connected Siliguri junction to Assam, Kishanganj, Haldibari and Barsoi till 1960, but after that this station was connected to Calcutta in 1960 with broad gauge. And, gradually, all other lines were also converted into broad gauge in following years.

The facilities and amenities that are provided to the visitors and passengers at Siliguri junction are a large waiting room, retiring room, and book stalls. The Siliguri Railway Station also has four-bedded dormitory and three double-bedded retiring rooms. It also has a tourist information centre in the station premises, which is helpful for tourists for any information about the city.

In 1961, a meter gauge Diesel Loco shed was found here at the Siliguri Junction, and in the year 2007, a new broad gauge loco shed was established here.

Major Trains at Siliguri Junction are;

  • Mahananda Express
  • Karmabhumi Express
  • Capital Express
  • Kanchan Kanya Express
  • New Jalpaiguri Railway Station:

The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station or NJP was found in the year 1961 and lies on the Darjeeling-Himalayan railway line. The other lines passing through New Jalpaiguri station are Howrah New Jalpaiguri Line, New Jalpaiguri Haldibari line and New Jalpaiguri Alipurdar Samkutala Road line. It comes under the control of Katihar division of Northeast Frontier Railway Zone of Indian Railways.

The station has eight platforms out of which 2 are narrow gauge and 6 are broad gauge lines. The basic amenities at New Jalpaiguri station are non-vegetarian and vegetarian refreshment stalls, books stall, computerised reservation and ticket booking centre. The station also has two AC retiring rooms with double beds, six Non-AC retiring rooms with double beds, one dormitory with three beds and one dormitory with twelve beds.

The New Jalpaiguri is included in the list of top hundred booking stations of Indian Railways. There are more than one hundred trains, which have a halt at New Jalpaiguri station. The station handles the train with a longest train route in India, which is Vivek Express from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari. It travels a distance of 4286 KM in 82.30 hours.

These are the major three stations in Siliguri city, which are serving a large number of passengers and tourists on a daily basis.
