Ambapalli is also called Amrapali or Ambapalika. She was a royal courtesan of Vaishali Republic around 500 BC. But she followed the Buddha to become an Arahant. The name Amrapali has been derived from mixture of two Sanskrit words, namely ‘Amra’ means mango and ‘Paliawa’ means young sprouts or leaves, as she was found beneath a mango tree in the royal gardens of Vaishali.
