Railway Stations in Coimbatore

In India, railways are the lifeline of the nation. With a route network of rails of around 36,500 miles, Indian Railways is the among world’s largest rail networks. Coimbatore is a major district in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India and is also known locally as Kovai. The district of Coimbatore has one main station which is known as Coimbatore main or Coimbatore junction. It also has other suburban stations serving at Coimbatore namely Coimbatore North Junction (CBF), Podnar Junction (PTJ), Irugur Junction (IGU), Singanallur Junction (SHI), Peelamedu (PLMD), Sulur (SUU), and Somanur (SNO).

Coimbatore Junction

Coimbatore junction or Coimbatore main is the primary railway station of the district and is one of the major railway stations in Southern India. After Chennai central, Coimbatore main is the second busiest and second largest revenue generating railway station of Tamil Nadu state. It is graded A1 railway station in Southern Railway Zone of Indian railways. This railway station also falls under the jurisdiction of Salem railway division. According to the records of Indian railways, it is one of the topmost booking stations in India.

Podanur Junction

Podanur Junction, located in Podanur, is the oldest and was the first railway station in Coimbatore. There are three platforms at the station and four routes branch off in 4 different directions. These routes are towards Irugur, towards Pollachi, towards Coimbatore Junction and towards Pakkad. This station handles both local trains and long distance trains from all over the country. This station comes under the command of Southern Railway Zone of Indian railway network. The railway division under which this station comes is the Salem Railway Division. The Podanur is the most important station in Coimbatore as it has trains for every part of India departing from here. It is one of the A graded railway stations in Southern Railway Zone. Once the work of Podanur – Dindigul gauge conversion will be over, many trains will operate from Podanur Junction and will be serving as a satellite railway station for city junction.

Coimbatore North Junction

Coimbatore North Junction or CBF is another railway station located in the city of Coimbatore. It is built as a relief station for Coimbatore main and is still under construction. Plans are to make 2 more platforms with approach roads being repaired. The main motive of building this station is to decrease the pressure on the Coimbatore main railway station by making more trains to stop here. From this railway station, the railway lines for Ooty and Mettupalayam branch off. Modernisation of this station is under process with the inclusion of retiring rooms, waiting rooms, refreshment stalls, a better concourse, and more pit and stabling lines.

Irugur Railway station

Irugur Railway station is situated in Irugur suburb of Coimbatore city. The railway station of this city connects to the Coimbatore Airport. The elevation of this railway station from the sea level is 343 meters and also acts as a connecting station for Coimbatore main and Coimbatore north Junction. It does not host many long distance trains but is a major stoppage for many local trains and is an important way of transportation for most of the people on a daily basis.
