Overview of Railway Stations in Ranchi

Ranchi Junction railway station (codenamed RNC) is located in the capital city of Ranchi district in Jharkhand, India. The Ranchi Junction station falls under the purview of South Eastern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. This station is also the busiest station in Jharkhand, followed by satellite station in Hatia. The Ranchi division was built only in early 2003 after the creation of the new state of Jharkhand and renovation was done in the Ranchi Junction till late 2012 to modernize the station. The station has six platforms and eight railway tracks to serve more than forty thousand passengers daily.

Ranchi Junction is well-connected to major cities of the country. This is one of the major stations in the Ranchi city and others include Hatia station, Tatisilwai station and Namkom station. This is one of the new divisions in the South Eastern Railway Zone, and due to the influx of passengers to the station, the railway management had added two new platforms in 2012 to have a total of six along with mechanical interlocking system at the station.

The high prevalence of domestic violence in the state due to Maoists threat in disrupting the government services put the city in red alert throughout the year. The Ranchi division faced many threats and damages to the railway network forcing discontinuation of train services thereby affecting thousands of passengers. The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) are involved in the safety of the railway system and stations to ensure the passengers’ transportation within the state.

The Ranchi Junction is modernized with automatic ticket vending machines, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) screens, emergency medical care units, fire engine services, tourist information centres and book stores, advance ticket reservation counters, and also, have beautiful passenger reservation centres. The variety of food restaurants located inside the station offer passengers a mix of local cuisines.

The famous places to visit in Vadodara are Hundru Fall (45 KM), Jagannathpur Temple (12 KM), Rajarappa Mandir (43 KM), Rock Garden (4 KM), Jamshedpur (129 KM), Bokaro Steel city (117 KM), Sun Temple (40 KM), and Johna Fall (40 KM). Ranchi Junction has many tourist bus services to the famous waterfall. The nearest Birsa Murda Airport is located at 5 kilometres, and Gaya Airport is at a distance of 180 kilometres. The proximity of the bus services near the station makes this ideal mode to transport into the city.

  • Hatia Railway Station –

The Hatai Railway Station is located north of Ranchi, and often, acts as a satellite station for the Ranchi Junction. This station codenamed HTE is operated by the Western Railway Zone and is 7 kilometres from the Ranchi Junction railway station. There are many trains originating from the Hatia railway station. The station has major facilities for the benefit of the passengers and is located close to the bus terminal and the Birsa Munda Airport (1 KM). There are three platforms and the station falls under the Ranchi division of the South Eastern Railway Zone of the Indian Railways. The station is the terminal point for several trains and the railway line is electrified.

  • Tatisilwai Railway Station –

The station codenamed TIS is located at 11 kilometres from the Ranchi Junction. The station is located around 14 kilometres from the nearest airport. The Tatisilwai station is located on the Hatia – Dhanbad railway line, and often, sees high number of major express and passenger trains cross the station. The three platform station is equipped with modern waiting rooms, refreshment centres, prepaid vehicle parking, and guarded by both the Government Railway Police (GRP), and Railway Protection Force (RPF).

  • Namkom Railway Station –

Namkom railway station code named NKM belongs to the South Eastern Railway zone. The station is located at 4 kilometres and near to the Hatia railway station. This station connects the Ranchi Junction through passenger trains and provides a low-cost transport option for those living in the northern part of the city. The station houses five platforms and is a major link between the Ranchi Junction and the Hatia Station. Apart from the basic amenities provided to the passengers, the security of the station is monitored by the Government Railway Police.
