New Delhi Railway Station

Situated between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj is the main railway station of Delhi, the New Delhi Railway Station. This station is considered the third busiest with 500,000 passengers daily. Out of the 300 trains that traverse through this station, the major trains are the Lucknow Swarn Shatabdi Express, the Lucknow Mail, the Chandigarh New Delhi Shatabdi Express, and the Kanpur Shatabdi Express. The Kerala Express to Thiruvananthapuram that starts from this station is considered the longest running train in India with daily services. The station has the largest route interlocking system in the world similar to the Kanpur Central Railway Station, i.e., 48.

Opened in the year 1926 with a single platform, this station now has 16 platforms. About 18 tracks run through the station. It was formerly known as the East Indian Railway Company. For the redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station, prior to the Commonwealth Games, Terry Farrell and Partners were commissioned in the year 2007. In the year 2009, a new building on the Ajmeri Gate side was opened by the Northern Railway. The new building spread over three floors has a total floor area of 900 m2. The Delhi Metro makes it convenient for passengers to reach the station via yellow line. It is also connected to the Indira Gandhi International Airport through the same metro line.
