Time Limit for the Refund –

  1. For confirmed reserved tickets, you can get your refund anytime before 2 hours of departure of the train.
  2. For RAC/waitlisted tickets, you can opt for a refund within three hours the actual departure of the train.
  3. For trains leaving between 21.00 hours and 06.00 hours, in that case, within two hours of opening of the Reservation Office, you can get a refund. This can be done if there are no counters available in the originating centre.

What Is Supposed To Be Done If The Due Date Of Refund Has Already Lapsed?

You can approach the Deputy Superintendent (commercial)/ Station Manager or Chief Reservation Supervisor. They can grant you refund up to 30 days of the date of journey.

If You Are Unable To Approach The Concerned Authorities, What Should You Do?

In that case, within 30 days of the date of travel, you must obtain a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) from the nearest station and submit an application to the Chief Commercial Manager of the Zonal Railways. This should be done within 90 days of the scheduled travel. The case will be examined, and accordingly, a refund will be sent to you by Station Pay Order or Money Order or Crossed Cheque.

How Much Will Be Deduced As Cancellation Charge?

This depends on the time of cancellation and the status of your ticket.

  • If you are cancelling your ticket more than 48 hours of scheduled time, then your amount of cancellation per person will be as follows –

  • If you cancel your ticket less than 48 hours to upto 6 hours before the scheduled departure time of the train, then you will have to pay a cancellation charge of 25% of the total fare paid.
  • If you are cancelling the ticket between less than 6 hours to 2 hours of the scheduled time, then the cancellation charge will be 50% of the total fair of the ticket.
  • If you want a refund for an RAC/Waitlisted ticket cancellation within upto 3 hours of the departure time of the train, then you will get a full refund of fare.
  • You can get a refund of the full amount in case of a cancellation of the train due to accident, breaches or flood.
  • You cannot get a refund for a lost ticket, but you can be allowed to travel after issuing a duplicate one.

Indian Railways Refund Rules

  3. For all untravelled RAC and waitlisted tickets, Rs. 20 per passenger would be deducted.

How to get a train ticket reserved?

Indian Railways have rules for reserving seats and berths and compartments which come with some regular terms and conditions. If a passenger wants to reserve a seat or a berth in any train which is under Indian Railways segment, then they need to buy a ticket from either the Railway Reservation Office or through an authorized Travel Agency. At present, one can also log in to the official website of Indian Railways called IRCTC and book a ticket online by purchasing them through debit cards or other mobile wallets.

How and when to reserve a ticket?

Reservation rules say that, one can book a train ticket earliest of 120 days before the date of journey of the train in all the classes. But the period of ARP or Advance Reservation is done only one the day of the departure of the train. In case of intermediate reservations, like when the train arrives to intermediate stations of the following day of the departure one can book them even before 120 days in advance of the date of journey of the train from those intermediate stations.

There is a requisition form which is given to be filled up before reserving tickets. A single person can book up to six tickets for six passengers for the same destination in the same train. Once the booking is done, they will get the confirmation ticket with the ten digit PNR number, written on the top left of the ticket. Any one of the six passengers need to present any one of the identity proofs like voter id card, pan card, ration car, adhar card, passport id, driving license, student identity card during the time of journey. If they fail to produce any one of the given identity proofs, it will be considered that the group of the passengers are traveling without tickets and they will be charged fine according to the law.

One person can submit only a single requisition form at a time. If return journey tickets should be confirmed as well, then a person can submit two requisition forms at a time. There is no reservation done on a provisional basis and no accommodation will be provided without purchase of a ticket. The passengers are requested to give the PNR number which is imprinted on the top left corner of the ticket in case if some officials ask it and require them regarding any problems in reservations.

Online ticket purchase

One can log into authorized online websites to get their reservation done in their preferable train depending on their date of journey and the destination. They can check through online websites about the details of any train and seat availability of the train as well. After checking them, they can book their tickets by paying through online payment procedures like debit cards or net banking. Once they receive the e ticket, they need to take a print out of it to produce on the date of journey.

One can even cancel their tickets if necessary with a minimum amount of cancellation charge.

Rule for Senior Citizens:

  1. The minimum age for availing concession is 58 years in case of WOMEN SENIOR CITIZENS and element of concession is 50% in Basic Fare only.
  2. The minimum age for availing concession is 60 years in case of MEN SENIOR CITIZENS and element of concession is 40% in Basic Fare only.

The Railway Administration reserves seats, berths, compartments, or carriage in accordance with the rules and conditions published in the Coaching Tariff. A passenger seeking reservation of berth or seats should purchase tickets from the Railway Reservation Offices/Authorised Travel Agency only.

Indian Railways Allow for Advance reservations generally up to 120 days in advance for all classes and all trains. The period of advance reservation is exclusive of the day of departure of the train.

An individual can book only up to six passengers on one requisition form provided all passengers are for the same destination and for the same train.

Central Railways has special Holi trains for passengers!

The Indian Railways is always looking for some or the other way to bring comfort to the passengers especially during the festive season. Most of the trains will be halting at Thane. The trains will be for Nagpur, Karmali, Bhatni and Gorakhpur.

The first train, LokmanyaTilak to Karmali will be running on 18th and 25th March. This train will arrive back to LokmanyaTilak Terminus the next day. The main stations at which this train will halt are Ratnagiri, Chiplun, Roha, Khed, Panvel, Kudal, Thivim, Sawantwadi Road and Thane.

The second train, Mumbai CST to Karmali will be running on the 19th and 26th March. This will return back from Karmali the same day. This special train will be halting at Thane, Dadar, Roha, Panvel, Chiplun, Kudal, Khed, Ratnagiri, Sawantwadi Road, Thivim and Kankavali.

The third train, LokmanyaTilak to Bhatni will be running on 18th and 25th March. This train will be leaving from Bhatni station on the 19th and the 26th March. This special train is going to halt at stations like Nasik Road, Thane, Kalyan, Itarsi, Bhusaval, Katni, Jabalpur, Satna, Allahabad, Azamgarh, Mau and many other important routes.

The fourth train, LokmanyaTilak to Nagpur will be running on the 22nd and 29th March. This will return back to the LokmanyaTilak Terminus the next day. This weekly special will be halting at Nasik Road, Thane, Kalyan, Wardha, Bhuswal, Badnera, Akola, Pulgaon, Jalgaon, Manmd, Igatpuri, Dhamangaon and Malkapur.

Railway Reservation Rules

Getting a railway ticket is something that is well sought for among travellers in India. Tatkal charges are fixed as per class of travel and the Indian railways website provides exact information of the applicable charges. Passengers can travel on Tatkal tickets as long as they have any of 10 identification proofs that are prescribed by the railways. PAN cards, drivers licence, voters ID card are some of the proofs that are admissible. As per railway ticket reservation rules, 10% of the tickets on the high demand and high speed Shatabdi trains are also available under the Tatkal scheme.

Reservation at stations:

Reservation of tickets at railways stations at pre-designated reservation counters commences 60 days prior to the date of travel. Computerization of ticket reservation allows real-time ticket booking so that the status of reservations is available at any given point in time. Railway tickets can also be booked till one hour of departure of the train from the current booking counter at the station.

Online reservation:

Reserving tickets online is quite a convenient mode of reservation. Indian railway online reservation rules stipulate that prospective travellers should register themselves on the Indian railways website. Cancellation rules

Passengers are allowed to cancel their tickets prior to departure of the train and get a refund of the fare depending on how much time prior to the departure the cancellation has been made. If a passenger does not arrive 10 minutes before the departure of the train, authorities are within their rights to allot the ticket to passengers whose tickets are booked under ‘reservation against cancellation’ status. Passengers attempting to cancel tickets post departure of the train will not be eligible for any refund in fare; hence, time is essence when it comes to ticket cancellations. 


 Railway rules are quite clear that only passengers who have reserved tickets should travel themselves on berths or seats that have been booked for them. Impersonation of any kind wherein a ticket is booked on someone’s name and someone else attempts to travel on the same ticket is prohibited and specifically liable to punishment as per applicable rules and laws.
