Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples which is dedicated to the Hindu lord Shiva. These caves are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri known as “the city of caves” nearby the city of Mumbai in east zone of the Indian state of Mahārāshtra. This island, located about 2 kilometers west of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Elephanta Caves is famous for its rock-cut art and architecture old ancient design from the times of medieval India. These are divided in two groups of the Elephanta Caves, the first is a large group of 5 Hindu caves and the second one is a smaller group of 2 Buddhist caves. From this place you can see an amazing view of the Mumbai skyline.

How to Reach Elephanta caves:

First you have to reach to Mumbai by air, by bus or by train. Once you reach to Mumbai then from any point in Mumbai, catch a local train for Church gate or CST (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal) station. Than from there you can either walk to the Gateway of India or hire a taxi/cab. Alternatively, you can reach to the Gateway of India directly through the local bus. On reaching the Gateway of India, you can hire a ferry to the Elephanta Caves which take 1.5 hour & ticket charges is of approx. 200 Rs for both the sides.

Best Time to Visit Elephanta caves:
Visiting hours timing is:-10:00 am (Morning) & closing at 5:00pm (Evening).
Closed on: Monday.
Morning hours are much better to visit this destination.
Best time to visit: Winter season from November to February are the best time to visit these caves. Avoid peak monsoon season (June to August) as the sea becomes unpredictable and ferry schedules get disrupted due to the heavy rain.
