Since childhood, I have traveled extensively all over India by trains, and one thing I mostly looked forward to during my journeys was the delicious food served in various dining cars of several luxurious trains and in the railway waiting rooms.
In the present era, unfortunately, all we eat in trains is “standardized” packed food – the inimitable exciting dining experience sitting in restaurant cars each serving unique cuisine has disappeared and most trains these days have crowded pantry cars where they only cook and pack awfully tasting cold food.

I vividly remember the delightful eating experience in the restaurant cars of the famous Mumbai – Howrah Mail watching whose Restaurant Car in those years was operated by South Eastern Railway & had the best – a variety of meals and the choicest of a la carte dishes, apart from their impressive English Style Tea Service though in typical Railway thick white crockery.
If we compare today’s quality of foods, it’s nothing even close to the hot nourishing cutlets, baked beans on toast, and delicious omelettes in the Restaurant Car of the magnificent Deccan Queen that treaded swiftly through the misty Western Ghats and since then remains the pride of the Central Railway.
However, I had frequented standard train journey also. Some of these important trains on the Southern Railway and South Central Railway did not have dining or restaurant cars, but delicious hot food in proper white cutlery was served in your compartment from the excellent refreshment rooms of stations. Their menu ranged from Southern Railway Speciality Meal of Mutton Madras Curry and Rice to the tasty spicy Chicken Biryani.
Those glorious days of delicious dining savouring sumptuous unique railway cuisine have now become a thing of the past.
