Traveling With Kids in Railways…? This Is For You…!

Traveling With Kids in Railways

Are you travelling with the kids in trains? If yes, do make sure to be aware of all revised rules as per the Indian Railways department when it comes to travelling with the kids of different age group. No doubt, while travelling with kids, people need to think and do consider factors of different sorts related to their health, meal and so. As per earlier defined rules, free services are been offered by the railways for kids below 5 years of age in all trains. The kids falling in between 5 to 12 years of age are charged with half of the adult fee in trains and they can claim for the berth as well. The premium trains including Shatabdis and Rajdhanis were offering free meal to those kids as well. Though, as per the revised rules that got effective from April, 2016, children from 5 to 12 years of age cannot claim for a berth, unless full ticket has been bought. Also, it was stated that it is absolutely not mandatory for children to buy a full ticket as well as they can opt for half ticket only and opt out for berths. In this way, they not only hold to half tickets on one end but on the other opt out for berths on the other. So, do make sure to be apprehended with all these rules and commotions especially if you are going to travel with your little ones this time and make sure you have no hassle left for the last minute of time.

We have to accept that Indian railway is running through the transformation phase in the recent past years. Slowly and steadily, the age old rules and regulations are being reformed to meet the existing demands of the customers. Modernization has crept into railways like never before. A few noteworthy aspects in this context are introduction of high speed trains, digitalizing the entire ticketing system, providing free internet access to its passengers and luxury trains aiming tourists. However, all these projects require huge investment. The railways have cleverly started to squeeze the revenue out of the existing system by making a few changes. One such modification is to revise the ticketing rules for children under age group of 5 to 12 years.  Check out more about this rule here under:

Existing rule: The existing rules provide free service to kids less than 5 years of age in all the trains. The children falling under the age group 5 to 12 years will be charged half the fare charged for adults. Despite paying only the half prices, these children can avail the berth. Rajadhani and Shatabdi trains are providing free food for children below 5 years of age.

Revised rule: The revised rule will be effective in all trains from 22nd of April 2016.  The revised rule states that children can’t avail a berth unless full ticket is issued. The revised rule is confined only to this category of passengers. However, it is not mandatory that the children of 5 to 12 years should necessarily purchase the full ticket. Passengers will always have a choice to opt for a berth or not. The assumption is that the passengers are most likely to stick to half tickets rather than going for berths. The railways can have the following benefits on successful implementation of this rule:

  • Railways can add about 20 million additional berths every year without having to incur any additional budget. In the year of 2014-2015 about 2.1 crore passengers of this age group availed this benefit of having berth for half ticket.
  • The capacity of trains can be increased to 20 million additional passengers, which includes women and senior citizens. This is equivalent to running 54 additional trains every day.
  • The total accommodation of the railways can be used to its fullest capacity.
  • Above all, a significant growth in the revenue of the railways can be witnessed.

IRCTC train availability

The railways are expecting an additional income of 525 crores of rupees annually solely because of this new rule. This additional income generated will help the railways to implement their plans like running new trains, designing attractive interiors and rendering quality services. Moreover, it also increases the passenger transport capacity of the trains. When you check out for IRCTC train availability, IRCTC seat availability, make sure to remember this new rule.

Such steps taken by the railways will help the department to make optimum use of its own resources. However, measures have to be taken so that the false claims regarding age of children are averted. The railways have to wait for a short time to know the passengers approach towards this new rule.
