Golden Temple Mail was known as Frontier Mail until September 1996. Before the Indian Partition, it was known to run between Peshawar on the frontier of British India along with Afghanistan. This is how it got its name of Frontier Mail. For the ease of British travelers that arrived in India on steamers, this train departed from Ballard Pier Mole Station in the summer months of September to December.

As per the biography of Subhash Chandra Bose, he used this very train to escape from a house arrest in Calcutta to Bombay and then to Peshawar using the Frontier Mail service. It has also been mentioned in the biography of famous actor Prithviraj Kapoor, who used Frontier mail to travel from his hometown in Peshawar to Mumbai in 1928 for acting in movies. This express was popularly called as the frontier mail and ran between 1928 & 1996. This train has its own share of history with the great hero, Subhash Chandra Bose having availed it to escape from the country.
