The Konark Express is a daily superfast train run by the Indian Railways between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (station code CST) Mumbai on the western coast and Bhubaneshar (station code BBS) close to the eastern coast. The train covers a distance of 1932 km in 37 hours and 15 minutes, giving it an average speed of 51 km per hour. The train travels through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The train is named after the Konark temple, the 13th-century Sun Temple in Odisha’s Puri district, 65 km from Bhubaneswar. The black granite temple, now a world heritage site, was built by King Narasimhadeva. Designed in the form of a huge chariot, the temple has seven horses and 24 wheels, carrying the sun god.

35 Stops on the Way;
The Konark Express (number 11019) leaves CST at 3:10 pm and reaches Bhubaneswar at 4:25 am on the third day. On the return journey, the train (numbered 11020) departs from Bhubaneswar at 3:20 pm and reaches CST at 3:55 am on the third day. The train stops at 35 stations on the way, including the major stops of Dadar, Kalyan, Lonavla, Pune, Daund, Solapur, Gulbarga, Secunderabad, Kazipet, Warangal, Mahbubabad, Vijayawada, Rajamundry, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Palasa and Berhampur and Khurda Road. History –

The service was flagged off in 2010 on March 24. The number of the train happened to be 22819 / 22820. The train was launched by Minister of State for Human Resources at Union level – Purandareswari. D. at the railway station of Vishakhapatnam. Local MPs, MLA’s of Vishakhapatnam district and officials of Railways of East Coast were present. It was started as a bi-weekly, but it is now a daily train as per the Rail Budget of 2013-14. From 2014 September, the position of 22819/22820 Vizag- Mumbai Express was deemed as ‘Ordinary Express’ with a number denoted by 18519/ 18520.

Train Route –

The train stops at Pune, Solapur, Gulbarga, Wadi, Vikarabad, Secunderabad junction, Kazipet, Vijayawada junction, Gudivada, Kaikaluru, Akkividu, Bhimavram, Tanuku and Rajahmundry on the route to Vizag. It traverses the same route on its way back, just the next way round.

Train’s History –

This train has also been unofficially known as Paschim Super Deluxe Express. After successfully running between Amritsar Junction and Mumbai Central, it was one of the first trains to be officially moved to Bandra Terminus to cater huge inflow of tourists and travellers from both the cities. Even though, it goes via Delhi, it does not stop at Hazrat Nizamuddin Station when it operates as train number 12926, that is, when it originates from Amritsar.

Service Information –

Paschim Express is a daily service that runs from Mumbai to Amritsar and Kalka. To go to Kalka, the train bifurcates at the Ambala Cantonment Junction. In its entire journey, Paschim Express covers a distance of 1821 kilometres covered within 32 hours between both the cities. Since the train travels at an average speed of almost 60 km/hr, it has been categorized as a super fast train and charges an additional surcharge in its ticket price for being prioritized over local or general mail trains.

Coach Information –

Paschim Express is equipped with AC 1st Class coach as the priciest seating option. There are also other budget alternatives like AC 2 Tier, AC 3 Tier, Sleeper Class and General Unreserved section. Back in the day, the train was pulled between Mumbai Central and Vadodara Junction using WCAM 1 and WCAM 2 2/2P locomotives. After this route, WAP 4 loco would take over until Ambala Cantonment Junction. WDM 3 twins hauled the train there after from Ludhiana until Jammu Tawi.

However, after Western Railways moved from DC to AC electric conversion in 2012, it has been pulled by WAP 4 from Vadodara to Ambala Cantonment followed by WDM 3 twins starting from Ludhiana until Jammu Tawi. After the electrification of Jalandhar and Jammu section, the train is being hauled all the way from Bandra Terminus to Jammu Tawi by WAP4E.
