Vaigai Express is in the superfast category and an intercity express that offers passengers with daily service between the stations Chennai and Madurai. It runs via Tiruchirapalli. Southern Railway Zone is in charge of its operation.

This train right from its inception has managed to catch the imagination of both the generations and offering timely service. There was a need for a day train between the stations of Madurai and Madras (now Chennai). Such was its popularity that its demand increased from 1970’s onwards. It was on 15th August 1977 that this train was first flagged down at 6am with the number 135 from Madurai. It also has earned the nickname of ‘Horse of the Chord line’ and does enjoy excellent reputation for being on time. Served by the Southern Railways, it is regarded to be the initial train in the Madurai Divn. To be hauled by WAP 7, the most prestigious Indian loco. The operating speed is 39 mph (63 km/hr).
