About Indian Railway Passenger Insurance

What will happen in the case of an accident while travelling by railway?

Passenger Insurance is an essential aspect of safe travel, especially when using mass transportation like Indian Railways. While accidents are unpredictable and can occur even when traveling in private vehicles, the concern deepens when one travels via government-run public transport. In such cases, the liability of compensation falls on the government. That’s where Indian Railway’s proposed Passenger Insurance plan becomes highly relevant.

Under this proposal, every train traveler will be insured for up to ₹10 lakh, ensuring financial protection during their journey. This Passenger Insurance coverage will apply only to the journey mentioned on the ticket, and the premium will be embedded in the ticket cost itself. Initially, this facility will be available for passengers who book their tickets online. Later, it is expected to extend to those purchasing tickets from counters and even to monthly pass holders.

In today’s fast-paced and safety-conscious travel environment, this move by Indian Railways is commendable. The introduction of Passenger Insurance is likely to boost passenger confidence and add another layer of reliability to railway services. With several progressive features introduced over the years, this step marks another milestone in enhancing passenger safety and trust in Indian Railways.
