In 1394, Khwaja Jahan Malik Sarwar, founder of Sharqi dynasty of Jaunpur, began his rule here. The district was absorbed in his empire by Akbar during the 16th century.
Sant Tulsidas was born at Sukar Kshetra in the district. His guru Narharidasâ?? ashram is situated there. Tulsidas composed â??Ramcharitmanasâ?? in Ayodhya, bordering Gonda. Its language is Awadhi. Swaminarayan Sampradaya founder Ghanshyam Pandey was born at Chhapaiya village in the district.
When East India Company took control of Awadh in 1856, Gonda became a district. Revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad had taken shelter here. One of his colleagues, Rajendra Lahiri, was hanged here in 1927 for his role in the Kakori Conspiracy.
The main occupation in the district is farming and wheat, pulses, paddy, sugarcane, oil seeds, mango and guava are among the main farm products. The districtâ??s Mankapur town has one of the six units of the Indian Telephone Industries. The district has numerous sugar mills. It has an agriculture research centre at Jaiprabha and a pottery industry hub at Khargupur.
