History –

The first run of the train was on 15 August, 1900. This makes it one among the oldest running train in the IR network. It deserves the epithet of classic train of India having traversed and served this route from the oldest days to present times (over 100 years). The first helmed by Steam engines such as WP class engines followed by diesel and thereafter by electric locomotives.

It enjoys the distinction of the first dieselized passenger train in 1964-65 in the South Eastern Railways. It was the main line between Chennai (Madras) and Howrah till the beginning of the Coromandal Express.

12839 Howrah Chennai Mail starts from Howrah every 11:45 pm and arrives on the second day at Chennai Central at 3:50 am, in the early morning. 12840 Chennai-Howrah Mail starts from Chennai Central every 11: 40 pm and arrives at Howrah on the second day at 4.10 am.

Traction –

The whole route has been electrified, and, therefore, the train is helmed by a WAP 4 range of electric locomotives made by the Indian Railways.
